چکیده

Assuming that general intelligence (g) is an honest signal of fitness, we expected g to be related to developmental quality as indexed by Fluctuating Asymmetry (i.e. non-pathological variation in the size of right and left body features). In a population sample of 44 men and 37 women, we assessed the relationship between Fluctuating Asymmetry (FA) and g, and, as a control, to the Big Five personality dimensions for which no theoretical relationship with FA was expected. We found a relation between g and FA in men and women, but only a marginally significant relation with Openness in women only. We conclude that about 20% of the variance in g is explained by FA, and discuss the implications for the evolution of g and human mate choice. 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Fluctuating asymmetry and general intelligence: No genetic or phenotypic association

Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) is the non-pathological left–right asymmetry of body traits that are usually left–right symmetrical, such as eye breadths and elbow to wrist lengths in humans, but which can be affected by developmental stressors. It is generally considered throughout biology to be an indicator of developmental instability and thus of lack of overall biological fitness. Several invest...

On the Relationship between General Factor and Foreign Language Proficiency

Raven Progressive Matrices (RPMs) and Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WSIC-R) are two common general intelligence measuring scales used in Iranian high schools. In this paper the relationships between g factor scales and students’ reading comprehension, grammar, and vocabulary was examined by correlation and regression analysis. Standard tests of grammar and vocabulary and Cambridge K...

P27: Brain Network as a Pivotal Part in Intelligence Function

Neuroimaging findings have proposed that some brain regions including the precuneus, posterior cingulate, and medial prefrontal cortex play an essential role of a structural core in the brain. Network organization endures rapid alterations in development with changes in axonal synaptic connectivity, white matter volume, and the thickness of corresponding cortical regions. Structural maturation ...
